CDC ALERT

  • Jul. 7th, 2009 at 2:21 PM
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially dangerous new virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically.

This virus is known as Weekly Overload Recreational Killer (WORK). If you receive WORK from your boss, a colleague, or anyone else, via any means whatsoever, do not touch it! This virus will wipe out your private life entirely. If you should come into contact with WORK, you should immediately leave the premises. Take two good friends, proceed immediately to the nearest bar or liquor store, and purchase one or both of the recommended antidotes — Work Isolating Neutralization Extract (WINE) or Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooster (BEER). Consume the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

You should immediately forward this medical alert to five friends. If you do not have five friends, you have already been infected and WORK is, sadly, controlling your life.

One of my favorite Adam Lambert performances from AI was "Feelin' Good" from Anthony Newley's The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd.

One of my favorite singers is John Barrowman, star of Broadway, West End London, and BBC's Torchwood. Since Torchwood Season Three premieres tonight on BBC One, here is John singing "Feelin' Good" from his album Another Side.

I love this quote!

From Gail Collins, in yesterday's New York Times, writing on Sarah Palin's resignation:
People, what is going on with governors in this country? Are we doomed to see them go bonkers one by one, state by state?

Palin, Sanford, Spitzer, McGreevey... help me out here, folks.

My new housekeeper is here; he's been attacking the disaster that is my kitchen for an hour now. (He's a cute, Latin gay boy I found on Craiglist. No, he's not one of those "nude cleaners." He's just a nice boy who cleans houses; I'm happy to be supporting my community, and his price was right!)

Since he's here, I goaded myself into a couple of my own household projects which I've been stalling and stalling - I got some of the artwork hung, and I went through the piles and piles of stuff on the dining room table and the coffee table in the living room. I gave up on the piles of "books to read" and shelved them (all together, at least), and threw away months of accumulated envelopes and junk mail. There are still piles of stuff, but it's not nearly as bad as it was. I got some of those SpaceBags this week; I got all the unused bedding together and packed 'em up - what used to take up a whole shelf in the hall closet is now stacked neatly in a pile at one end, taking up less than a third of the space it used to. I also got all the Ren garb, and my winter sweaters/sweatshirts vacuumed up and stashed under the bed.

I still have more art work to hang, but it's in boxes in the back of the coat closet (the stuff I hung today was out, leaning against a wall). And I still have eight or ten boxes that aren't unpacked - but they're mostly books or VHS tapes, so will probably not get unpacked ANYWAY. I should just move them to my sister's attic, but that means lugging them downstairs, loading them in my car, then lugging them upstairs at her place... feh.

Anyway, I'm proud of myself! Good job, me. (And I'm tagging this as a non-scale victory because despite all the running around, I'm neither tired nor winded!)

I hardly ever go out to bars anymore. Since the dearly departed Eighty-Eights closed, I just don't have much interest. I especially have made it a point to avoid the City on Gay Pride weekend for nigh onto a decade now. Pissy bitter fags and messy drag queens stumbling around the Village and Chelsea are just not my idea of a good time. So how did I find myself in Chelsea last night?

I met a guy on one of the personals sites a couple of weeks ago. He and his boyfriend are new-ish to the area, looking for friends, and contacted me. Plans to meet 2 weeks ago fell through. He emailed me yesterday morning; the boyfriend is out of town, and did I want to go out to dinner? I had nothing else planned, so I said yes. Picked him up, went to City Island and had a lovely broiled seafood platter (which we shared, because OMG SO MUCH FOOD) and a couple of fairly large mojitos.

At some point over dinner, he managed to talk me into going out; don't ask me how, because I still don't know. So I pointed the car at the West Village and off we went. Of course, I had forgotten that vast tracts of the Village would be closed to traffic because of the Parade and the festival and dance on Pier 54, so we quickly abandoned the idea of hitting a piano bar (The Monster) and redirected towards Chelsea. We stopped and had a drink at Rawhide (one of the oldest gay bars still operating in New York - over 30 years!), then headed around the corner to Barracuda, which wasn't overly crowded and was playing some great 80's songs. Had a couple of drinks there (I was good and switched to soft drinks after the first one), then headed over to G Lounge, which had a LINE. No bar is worth standing in line, so we turned around. As we were heading back to the car, we passed Gym Bar, so Richard dragged me in for "one more drink" - which turned into three, because we got into a conversation with a cute couple standing next to us at the bar. I finally dragged him away and headed north.

I fell into bed around 330 this morning, and was up at 630. I'm feelin' mighty rough... and I left my coffee mug in the dishwasher at home. Thank G-d for Dunkin' Donuts.

Taxes

  • Jun. 28th, 2009 at 11:27 AM

I got the letter from the IRS on Friday. After everything, my tax liability for 2004 is zero, and 2005 is $4800. With the penalty and interest, I owe about 6 grand. Considering that the initial assessment was $83,000, I really can't complain. (If my record keeping was better, I wouldn't even owe them that much, but I couldn't find all my receipts from 2005.)

Now is the time to repeal DOMA

  • Jun. 26th, 2009 at 12:43 PM
First John Ensign. Now Mark Sanford. Seems like a lot of politicians who've voted to ban gay marriage have broken their own marriage vows.

And that's why this is exactly the right time to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) - the awful legislation that prevents legally married same-sex couples from accessing federal rights and benefits.

President Obama claims he's in favor of repealing DOMA - he just needs for Congress to send him a bill. Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Reid should give him the opportunity to make good on his word.

I just signed a petition to tell Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Reid to introduce legislation to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. I hope you will, too. Please have a look and take action.

Did I mention?

Did I remember to post about last semester's grades? Yeah, that's what I thought.

So I got an A in Biostats. The other class, Health Care in the US, was giving me a lot of trouble, so after talking to the prof, I took an Incomplete and will try again in the Fall. Should be easier to cope, since it will be 4:30 instead of 7:00.

Intro to Epidemiology is going well; the midterm is tonight!!!

I have joined the sheep. I bought an iPhone 3GS. This means that the 732 cell number is DEAD. The 914 number, which I have been pushing on everyone for months, will forward to the new iPhone. If you have a reason to text me, ask me for the new cell number; if not, just call the 914 number you already have.
